Vipers Make up game

Big Stick,

Very nicely played tonight. The baserunning, attention span and overall defense continues to be pretty good. We need to make sure balls are not getting by the outfielders. Those are killers. Also, we need to make sure to make the routine play on the infield. Overall I am very happy. I felt the bats were off a little tonight. Yes, we scored 28, but looking at the scorecard the other team made a lot of errors. We had a lot of pop flys too. Granted we had some great at bats, and a couple players in particular excelled tonight vs their opening game performance. We had great production from the lead off spot as that player scored 5 times. That is a good sign. I felt our edge was off a little tonight. But that is what comes with playing an inferior opponent. We need to play better as a team, and we will.

Again, great effort, good attention span, very focused and pretty good baserunning. Good defense and hitting in spots. We need more consistency at the plate and in the field across our 13 player team. We are only as good 1-13 as 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13 will make us.

See everyone on Saturday! Try and arrive at 1:00 PM. I will let everyone know where the game is when I find out.

Our game Saturday will be at 1:30 PM against the Falcons. I'm not sure yet what field. Will know for sure soon. Again, 1:30 PM Saturday against the Falcons.

Morning Star Church - Easter Service 4:45 PM Saturday

If anyone is interested in joining Teri and I for Easter Service please let us know. We go to Morning Star Church which is off of Feise Road, right next to Prairie View Elementary. They have 6 services this weekend. We will be attending the 4:45 PM Saturday service. Other families that also attend this wonderful church are the Cogles' and Haynes'. Just let me know if you are interested and Teri, Trinity, Tyson, Trace and I will meet you in the parking lot at 4:30 PM.
We would be honored to have you. Maybe dinner after?

Baseball Gloves

If anyone is in the market for a new baseball glove I have a recommendation. Mizuno has these gloves with the "Power Close" technology that is perfect for younger players. One of the frustrating things about buying a new glove is the time it takes to break in, but the Mizuno Power Close gloves are very easy for the younger player to open and close. I bought one for Trace and he loves it. You can get these at Sports Authority.

As for size of glove, this comes down to preference. My recommendation is to get at least a 10.5 inch to a 11.5 inch. The younger player with a bigger margin of error is a more consistent player. Some of the bigger kids can handle the bigger glove. The smaller players could get a way with a smaller glove. As an example, Tyson has a 11.5 and loves it. Trace has an 11.5 too, but in hindsight I could have gotten him the 11 inch instead, just due to his size. There are advantages to smaller gloves in the infield as the kids get older, but I truly believe having a larger glove builds greater confidence in the kids, especially catching a thrown ball or catching a line drive/fly ball. I'd think hard about an 11 inch - 11.5 inch glove. One he can grow with.

For those golfers out there, think of a glove to your boy like your putter to you. Its nice to pick out your own, feel comfortable with it and build confidence with it....just before you missed that 2 footer that cost you $10 on the skin and then turning around and throwing it into the lake!!!!

Big Stick Cardinals Baseball Club Latest.....

Big Stick Cardinals Baseball Family,

SPAA Manager Meeting - Monday
On Monday, I attend a Manager's meeting for SPAA. One of the things I have to submit are the days that we have scheduling issues. All games are scheduled Monday-Friday.

The season starts the week of April 19th and will run into mid-July. I wanted to know if there are any dates of conflict for you. If you could let me know by Sunday night I will try and see if those dates can be avoided.

Uniforms & Bat Bags
I have placed the uniform order. They should be ready early April.
The bat bags are in already!

Practice Schedule
I am still leaning towards practicing on Sunday nights this season at Strehl. I hope that field availability will be ok on that night. SPAA feels it will be. They have 5 fields so hopefully we will be able to get on. I'm going to run practice each Sunday from 5:30 - 7:00 PM. Everyone seems to be good with that date. Practice will begin March 28th. It truly is the only realistic time to practice.

Tournaments
Another thing I want everyone to begin thinking about is how many tournaments we are going to play in. There are around 12 tournaments locally that we could play in between April-September. Tournaments cost between $275-$400 per team. As long as we have at least 10 kids that want to play in these tournaments we can roll into them. However, I never want to spend your money without your consent. I'll get out a tournament schedule to look at in the upcoming weeks so that we can give that some consideration. We could play any where from 0-12 tournaments. I'm crazy enough I'd play in all 12, but this is a team decision, so I will get all the details out later this month.

All for now. See everyone on the 15th of March for batting practice. NO BATTING PRACTICE THIS MONDAY.

Bat Bag Update

Thank you to yet another sponsor that has stepped up and will cover the cost of our bat bag purchase. Gateway Products' Josh Skow has stepped up with $300 to pay for 13 bat bags for the boys. They are red and black Mizuno bags. Thank you Josh!

Uniform Update

If you have not gone to Gaffney's yet to measure for uniforms please do so by Tuesday evening. I am going to put the order in to get the uniforms made on Wednesday. Please make sure you go by to try on the shirts, pants and hat. The shirts as big. The hats come in various sizes as they are flex fit.

Also if the guys want hats please let me know so I can order them for you. Go get your hat size measured though at Gaffney's and tell them you want a hat and they will put you down.

Big Stick Bat Bags

I have come across a great deal on new red and black bat bags for the Big Stick team. These bat bags are only $20 a piece. I was thinking in the best interest of team unity that we purchase these bags and possibly get them embroidered with the kids names and numbers. What do you think? The kids will love them! I'm not sure what the embroidery will cost but I have someone who can do this for us. Anyone opposed? I think having 13 red and black bat bags hanging on the fence by our dugout would be awesome! I want to order them all at once so let me know if you are opposed.

Uniform Update

As you already know, we are covered financially for our uniforms. Thanks to Haynes Custom Mailboxes, The Tax House and Fitzgerald Fotography we have new hats, jerseys, pants, socks and belts for this season.

Gaffney's on Hwy K will be producing the uniforms. All you have to do between now and Sunday, February 28th is take your little tike down to Gaffney's for sizing. Let them know you are with the Big Stick Cardinal Baseball Club and they will get you all set up.

After we get everyone's sizes set, then I will put the finishing touches on design and we will get those bad boys ordered. It will take a minimum of 4 weeks from the time we place the order, so it is important we get the sizes in by Monday.

Gaffneys knows you are coming. Can't wait to get the season started!

Big Stick Cardinals Update

Well we are all signed up for SPAA Spring. Season will start week of April 19th and be completed sometime in July. We will play a 12 game schedule. If there are enough teams, as of right now there are 11, they will seperate the teams into an A and B division. As returning champions from the fall I have asked to be placed into the advanced A division.

An update on uniforms....we have approached a few different companies for sponsorship. The full uniforms will cost approximately $900. This includes hat, jersey, pants, belt and socks. Also 2 coaches hats and jerseys. I am attempting to get these new uniforms for free thru sponsorship, but we will see how successful we can be. If you have any ideas or any contacts with businesses in the area for sponsorship, please feel free to step up and support the Big Stick Cardinal Baseball Club. We have to order our new uniforms by March 5th in order to have them ready for our first game. I would like eliminate any of us paying a dime for these new uniforms so if you have sponsorship contacts please explore them. I have 2 proposals out right now and will probably put a 3rd out there this weekend.

Just Hello

I hope everyone is having a great week. Looking forward to a great Super Bowl on Sunday! I think the Colts are the better team and have the experience as many on the team have already been in the big game, but who knows right?

Batting practice Monday night. If you are unsure of your time let me know and I'll send out the spreadsheet again.

Also, 2 families have yet to pay the $38 for the 9 batting practice sessions we reserved. Please have the money on Monday night. Also, if you have not yet paid for the season fee of $95 per player, $75 a player if you have two kids, please have the money available Monday. Make checks payable to SPAA.

Big Stick Christian Small Group

I keep denying. I keep ignoring. I can't keep it up. The Lord has been laying the opportunity to start a Chrisitan Small Group at my feet and I can ignore this no longer. I am sorry to those that are interested that I have not made this opportunity available sooner.

My inspiration is to get together on the 2nd and 4th Saturday each month. To identify a book to work through as a group that is of interest to everyone. A book of growth in our Christian walk. Suggetions welcome. Teri and I would gladly host everyone, including kids. The adults could take an hour or so for the study and we can send the kids to another part of the house. In addition we can take time to break bread together. I think this would be a great time!

For those that are interested, let me know. We could get started as early as February 13th.

Bat Size

For those of you that are in the market for a new bat for your little guy, may I strongly suggest the following guidelines....
  • No one on the team should be swinging a bat less than 27 inches in length.
  • If you are 40-44 inches tall and weigh less than 70 lbs, you should consider a 27 inch bat.
  • If you are 45-48 inches tall and weigh less than 80 lbs, you should consider a 28 inch bat.
  • If you are 49-52 inches tall and weigh less than 90 lbs, you should consider a 29 inch bat.
  • If you are 53-56 inches tall and weigh less than 100 lbs, you should consider a 30 inch bat.
Now the ounces your child swings can vary greatly depending on which type of bat you get. That is something you want your little guy to be very comfortable with. For example, Trace, who is 47 inches tall and weighs 49 lbs prefers to swing a 27-28 inch bat that is 15-16 ounces. Tyson, who is 52 inches tall and weighs 67 lbs likes to swing a 29-30 inch bat that weighs 18-19 ounces. The weight comes down to preference.

Let's talk more about this on Monday night. I'd like to discuss things like bat speed, force thru the ball and the advantage of having a longer shaft at the point of impact.

Big Stick Cardinals - 2010

Can you smell it? Can feel it? Well I can taste it!!! The Big Stick Cardinals are back and better than ever. New uniforms! New attitude! New commitment! Same 'ole ball coach. :( Sorry I couldn't help you there.

Here are some details to prepare for our next season making some noise in eastern MO!

  • We will play at St. Peters Athletic Association - Pee Wee II (Pitching Machine)
  • Season begins week of April 19th (12 game schedule)
  • All games will be on weekdays, except for rainouts which will be made up on weekends.
  • Games will be at Strehl (where we played in the fall) and/or at Woodlands (near SCCC/Mid - Rivers GC)
